Book Design
Your book should look as professional as its content. We design covers that sell at thumbnail size and interiors that signal quality the moment a reader flips them open.
Book a Strategy CallWhat we design
Cover design
Front cover, spine, and back cover, in multiple directions. We test every cover at Amazon thumbnail size, because that is where the first sale is won or lost.
Interior typesetting
Professional page layout with proper chapter openers, running heads, typography, and heading hierarchy. Readable on page one and still readable on page two hundred.
Diagrams and frameworks
If your book contains frameworks, models, or data visualisations, we design them to print beautifully and stand up to screenshot sharing.
Ebook formatting
Reflowable EPUB files for Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, and Google Play. Built to work across every screen and font size setting.
Why cover design is the single biggest sales lever
Nothing else matters as much as the cover. A strong cover can carry a mediocre book; a weak cover will cap the sales of a great one. On Amazon, your book competes against ten other covers in a thumbnail grid — if yours does not stand out in that grid, it does not get clicked.
We commission covers in multiple directions so you can choose from real options, not a single take-it-or-leave-it concept. And we test every shortlisted cover at thumbnail scale before we finalise it, because that is where the reader's first decision happens.
Our book design process
Book design at Quartz Press runs on a fixed process that takes roughly four to six weeks from kickoff to print-ready files. We start with a cover brief — a working session where we unpack your audience, your comp titles, the shelf you want to live on, and the emotional register the cover needs to hit. Business books sell on trust signals, not pretty illustration, and a good brief saves three rounds of revisions later.
From there, the cover designer produces three directions, each with a distinct typographic treatment, colour palette, and imagery choice. You pick a direction, we refine. Once the cover is locked, we move to interior typesetting: chapter openers, running heads, part divisions, pull quotes, and any frameworks or diagrams that need custom layout. The final stage is press-ready PDF/X-1a for print and a reflowable EPUB for digital retailers.
Every cover is tested at Amazon thumbnail size (roughly 150 pixels wide) and against a grid of ten competing titles before we call it finished. If it does not read clearly at thumbnail scale, it does not ship.
Book design FAQs
Can I bring my own cover designer?
Yes, in some cases. If you already have a designer you trust, we can art-direct them through our process and review their work against the same thumbnail-scale tests. Most authors prefer to hand the whole design job to us so the cover, interior, and ebook all share a single visual system.
Do I own the cover artwork afterwards?
Yes. You own the final cover files, the interior files, and every asset we produce. You can reuse the cover on your website, on slide decks, in advertising, and on any future edition without coming back to us.
How many revision rounds are included?
Two full revision rounds on the chosen cover direction and two full revision rounds on the interior layout. In practice most authors are done in one. We scope extra rounds at the strategy call if you already know the project needs them.
